When I introduced the “One Word” concept to leaders in our church at the beginning of 2013, I had no idea the impact it would make. To say “they embraced it” is an understatement! However, I did not know the full extent of its impact until 2013 came to a close.
As 2014 began, without being asked, leaders started telling me their “One Word” for 2014 – Serve, Obedience, Intentional… (Aren’t those wonderful words?)
One of our small group leaders asked if we were going to do “One Word” again and he shared with me that he is introducing the “One Word” idea to his small group, asking them to all choose a word and he will provide follow-up throughout the year as they meet.
In Women’s Ministries, we are expanding “One Word” into our Mom’s Ministry, asking each lady to choose a word for her role as a mom. Some of the words chosen were – Grace, Patience, Unity, Thoughts, Faith…
Also, in our weekly women’s discipleship groups, “One Word” has become a focus and I am excited to see how the women will grow and hold each other accountable to the “One Word” the Holy Spirit gives each of them.
Who knew that something as simple as “One Word” for the year would lead to such camaraderie, spiritual growth and discipleship? Sometimes, as leaders, we tend to overlook simple things that have big impact, but God shows up in the simple and does amazing things!
I encourage you to prayerfully consider using “One Word” with your church, especially with the leaders you serve, and see for yourself the impact it will make in developing committed followers of Christ.
