Have you been listening to lies lately? I’m not talking about just hearing lies, but listening to them. There’s a difference between hearing and listening. Hearing is the physical act of sound coming into your ears (or thoughts coming into your head), but listening is when you take what you hear and act upon it. For example, when you tell your child to do something, you expect them to “listen” to you and do what you asked.
Listening is a good thing, unless you are listening to lies.
There are many lies that you may hear during any given day. Lies about who you are, your value or worth, your future, the future of your children, etc . . . Most often, I find these lies come through my thoughts, but sometimes these lies are spoken by others as well.
The thing about lies is that they always lead to discouragement and defeat.
In John 8:44, Jesus tells us where lies come from. . . . When he (the devil) speaks a falsehood, he speaks what is natural to him, for he is a liar [himself] and the father of lies and of all that is false. (Amplified Version)
It is important to recognize where lies come from . . . straight from the pit of hell! Refuse to listen to lies. Do not let the discouragement and defeat that lies bring grip your heart. Counteract the lies that enter your mind (and try to work their way into your heart) with Truth. Notice Truth is capitalized! Whereas the devil is the father of lies, Jesus is the Voice of Truth! When a lie comes, you defeat it by finding a truth to counteract it.
- When you’ve made some mistakes and feel like a failure, remember the Truth that Jesus thinks you were valuable enough to give His life for. Mistakes don’t define you, but, rather, they can keep you humbly reliant upon God.
- When you are going through a hard season and you wake up listening to the lies that nothing is ever going to change, remember the Truth found in Lamentations 3:21-24, “Yet this I call to mind and therefore I have hope: Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. I say to myself, ‘The Lord is my portion; therefore I will wait for him.’”
- When someone you love is making poor choices, remember the Truth that God is faithful and this is not the end of their story. He who began a good work in them will be faithful to complete it! Phil. 1:6
The Voice of Truth is LOUDER than the father of lies.
Don’t listen to lies, let faith arise by listening to the Voice of Truth!
Thank you, God, that you sent your Son into this world to be Truth. Thank you, too, for the Holy Spirit who is the Revealer of Truth. Train my mind to tune out lies and tune in to Your Voice of Truth. When I am tempted to listen to a lie, show me the Truth to counteract it. Give me faith to believe your Voice of Truth and help me to live like I believe it. In Jesus’ Name and for His sake, Amen
