This morning, as I was reading the Bible to my 16 year-old daughter, a couple of verses jumped off the page and into my “heart”. Because of the significance of this day, when people are consumed by thoughts of love, I wondered if what was meaningful to me, might also speak to your “heart” as well.
In Romans 1, Paul is speaking to the believers in Rome:
You and I are invited to belong to Jesus. Isn’t that what everyone desires . . . to belong and be accepted and loved by someone? If you look at the hype of Valentine’s Day and what a money maker it is, the overwhelmingly clear answer is, “Yes!” Every year, my “heart” hurts for those who base their value and worth upon whether they have a Valentine (or someone to belong to). The fact of the matter is, Jesus has invited everyone to be His Valentine. It sounds corny, but it’s true. He is the One Who put the desire to belong in each of us and our “hearts” are restless until they fully belong to Him.
The other interesting thing to note about Romans 1:6 is the little phrase in brackets [as you are]. It reminds me of something we used to do in middle school/high school, the dreaded “come as you are” breakfast. Have you ever experienced that horror? A come as you are breakfast is when you go to your friend’s house and get them early in the morning to “come as you are” for breakfast. I used to dread the thought of those impromptu get togethers!! I much preferred having time to take a shower, put my make-up on, and do my hair. Now that I am older, I often “come as you are” and quite enjoy it (-smile-)! There is something freeing about coming “as you are”. That’s how Jesus invited you and me to come. We didn’t have to get all cleaned up and look our best for Him. He has seen us at our worst and it doesn’t affect His opinion of us one bit. He loves us, zits and all! There is something that endears my “heart” to Jesus when I think about that. He loves me just as I am. He loves you just as you are. He invited you, just as you are, to belong to Him.
Let’s remember that on this “Hearts” Day. Jesus has invited you, just as you are, to belong to Him. There is no better feeling, today or any day, to belong to the One Who loves you just as you are and Whose love will never fade or fail. Your “heart” is His forever!
Happy “Hearts” Day friends.
